WHERE WE STARTED
The Gresham Stand Up Movement was founded in May 2020 by Shemar Lenox and Jaylen Welch after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN. These young men took to the streets to lead protests in Gresham, OR, and outlying cities to stand against systematic oppression and racism. This lead to opportunities to meet and work with local government, and leaders to hold them accountable for the inequities within our government, city, police, and school systems. While doing this work, we saw the lack of available services for our community. GSU began meeting the immediate needs of community members with food, household goods, emergency shelter, contributions towards utilities, holiday programs and more. All of this was done solely by the generous contributions of our own community members. Although
Shemar and Jaylen went on to advance their personal lives, the work continues today.
